ARC-UNDP CELEBRATION, WINDSOR NOVEMBER 2-4, 2009

The Windsor Celebration is being hosted by ARC and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). His Royal Highness The Prince Phillip is hosting the core event at Windsor Castle on November 2nd and His Excellency, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is hosting the special dinner on the evening of the 3rd.

 

HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

 

HRH The Prince Philip was born Prince of Greece and Denmark in Corfu on 10 June 1921; the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece. On November 20, 1947 he married Princess Elizabeth of England, now Queen Elizabeth II. He is Patron or President of some 800 organisations. His special interests include scientific research and development, the encouragement of sport, the welfare of young people, and conservation and the environment. Prince Philip was the first President of WWF-UK from its formation in 1961 to 1982, and International President of WWF from 1981 to 1996. He was the Founder of ARC  in 1995 and will be hosting the lunch on November 3 at Windsor Castle.

 

 

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

 

Ban Ki-moon is the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations. He succeeded Kofi Annan in 2007. Previously he was a career diplomat in South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in the United Nations. He has taken particularly strong views on global warming, and believes that civil society action is critical to solving the current environmental crisis. On 3 November he will join HRH The Prince Philip to honour faiths for their long-term commitments and offer a keynote address.

 

 

Olav Kjørven

 

Olav Kjørven is Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Assistant Administrator for UNDP. He heads UNDP's Bureau for Development Policy. He was previously a State Secretary under Norway's Minister of International Development Hilde Frafjord Johnson. In 2005, he was appointed Director of UNDP's Energy and Environment Group. He has previously worked in the World Bank, the consulting company Econ and as a political adviser in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is a key member of the executive group responsible for the Windsor Celebration.

 

 

Martin Palmer

 

Martin Palmer is Secretary General of the Alliance of Religions and Conservation (ARC), which assists 11 world faiths in developing environmental and conservation projects worldwide. He appears regularly on BBC Radios 3 and 4, BBC World Service and BBC TV both as a presenter as well as contributor to programmes such as In Our Time; Thought for the Day, Nightwaves and Songs of Praise. His work on sacred sites has won awards. He is a key member of the executive group responsible for the Windsor Celebration.
